What are Olympic freestyle events ?
Four
freestyle skiing
events were held in Sauze d'Oulx. There were both men's and women's competition in both aerials and moguls events. In
moguls
, the athletes ski down a slope littered with moguls, attempting to get down in as fast a time as possible
while also attempting to get points for technique and their two aerial jumps during the course. The aerials events consisted of two jumps, which were judged by air, form and landing.
The Winners in 2006
The mens moguls event was won by Australia’s Dale Begg Smith, whilst the womens event was won by Jennifer Heil from Canada. The gold medal in the aerials event went to Han Xioapeng from China, and to Evelyne Leu in the womens
New School Freestyle
Currently there are two main branches of freestyle skiing: one encompassing the more traditional events of
moguls
and
aerials
, and a newer branch often called
new school
, comprising events such as
halfpipe
, big air,
slopestyle
, and big mountain or free-skiing. New school skiing has grown so much that new ski companies have been created, companies that strictly make twin-tip skis — skis that are designed for taking off and landing in "switch" (backwards) on jumps and rails.
New this year in Sauze d’oulx ,a beginners snow park, designed by some of the best Italian freestylers, for those who want to try something different.
